Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Stalked ear appendages at tip; varying to infolded ears. Terminal meristem
produces stalked ear appendages at tip, with silks emerging from top whorl of
leaves. This tassel is often enclosed in husks, and lower branches may be
somewhat feminized or may be complete ears with their own set of husks. The
first subterminal node produces a tassel which pushes past the terminal ear to
emerge through the above-mentioned silks to give the appearance of a terminal
tassel with silks. The other nodes are also distinctive, often shortened
erratically. Leaves emerge at sharp angles, noticeable even at juvenile stage.
Plants shorter than normal siblings. Classification is good at seedling stage
(leaves emerge at right angles), plant excellent. Standard severe allele, te1-
1, has 5-fold reduced levels of te1 transcript (B. Veit). Candidate locus for
QTL on 3L that controls plant and inflorescence differences between teosinte
and maize plant(Doebley 1995). 3 kb transcript specifically expressed in
vegetative apical meristems (B. Veit). Genetic 2005 3 coordinates determined
from these recombination and map data: TB-3La te1; [umc26 -3- te1 -4- bnl5.37a
with teosinte]; see MaizeGDB ID:165108; 66578. This gene was originally curated
in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map
if feasible.
