ID 810
Name ig1 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) indeterminate gametophyte1
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200265
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Low male fertility, polyembryony, heterofertilization, polyploidy, androgenesis
(male and female affected). Mitotic divisions of ig1 embryo sacs are
asynchronous and the total number of cells and nuclei produced is variable.
Embryological consequences include twinning, heterofertilization, and the
production of miniature and abortive kernels due to elevation of endosperm
ploidy level. Haploids are common, many of which are paternal. Homozygous
plants are male sterile in some backgrounds. Classification very good for
miniature abortive kernels. (J. Kermicle). Paternal haploids, e.g., from an
inbred line, will receive cytoplasm (chloroplasts and mitochondria) from the
maternal parent. The recessive ig1, heterozygous or homozygous, in combination
with cytoplasmic male sterility (cms-C, -S, or -T), frequently generate embryos
that are paternal haploids, excluding both the maternal genotype and the ig1
gene but containing the maternal cytoplasm. When doubled, such haploids are
direct conversions from the inbred line into the C, S, or T version. If the
inbred line is non-restoring (e.g., rf1, etc.), haploids will be male sterile
but can be backcrossed to the inbred line maintainer. Selection of paternal
haploid embryos is aided by the presence of dominant embryo color factor R1-nj
and required complementary factors - i.e., embryo color is absent when the
maternal constitution is lost. Genetic 2005 3 coordinates determined from these
recombination and map data: gl6 -21- ig1 -12- lg2; see MaizeGDB ID:935658. This
gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was
displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
